What Is Shopify Plus? Explained for Business Owners

So what is Shopify Plus exactly? Putting it simply, it’s just the enterprise version of Shopify — made for businesses that have outgrown regular Shopify plans. Shopify Plus offers you the additional power, increased flexibility, and dedicated support to really handle all that scale if your store is serious about sales volume, traffic, or managing multiple storefronts.

It’s Basically ‘Shopify, But Bigger’

Regular Shopify plans (Basic, Grow, Advanced) work great for small to mid-sized stores. But once your business starts growing fast — more orders, more traffic spikes, more complexity — those plans start feeling limited. That’s exactly where Shopify Plus steps in. It’s built on the same Shopify foundation you already know, just with a lot more muscle behind it.

What Makes It Different

A few things differentiate Shopify Plus from standard plans.

  • Custom checkout: Plus gives you full access to Checkout Extensibility — the toolkit for customizing every step of checkout (Information, Shipping, Payment). Regular plans have more limited checkout customization options by comparison.
  • Advanced Enterprise Automation: While basic automation tools like Shopify Flow are available on standard plans, Plus unlocks custom API limits, exclusive launch tools (Shopify Launchpad), and enterprise-grade B2B workflows.
  • B2B functionality: Basic B2B tools (like business accounts and custom pricing) are now available on regular Shopify plans too. Plus is where you get the advanced B2B features — unlimited catalogs, direct catalog assignment to companies, partial payments, and deposits — that serious wholesale operations actually need.
  • Multiple stores: Run multiple storefronts with a single account — useful if you sell in different countries or under different brands.
  • Ability to Handle Higher Traffic: The Plus is designed to withstand heavy traffic surges without causing your online store to go down or be slow.
  • Dedicated support: More personalized support from the Shopify team.

Who Actually Needs Shopify Plus?

This is the big question. Shopify Plus isn’t meant for every store — it’s meant for businesses at a certain stage. You’d likely benefit from it if:

  • Your store is generating a large, steady volume of monthly sales
  • You’re dealing with heavy traffic, especially during sales or launches
  • You run multiple stores or sell in multiple countries
  • You need wholesale or B2B selling built into your store
  • You’ve outgrown the customization limits of the regular Shopify plans

For most stores, especially ones that are still relatively small or starting up, the regular Shopify plans are more than enough. If you try to plug into Plus too soon, you will be paying for features that are not yet required.

What About the Cost?

Shopify Plus does have a published starting price — $2,300/month on a 3-year term, or $2,500/month on a 1-year term. But that’s just the platform fee. Once you add apps, transaction costs, and any custom Shopify development, the real monthly spend is usually higher: a store doing around $1M/year in revenue often ends up paying $5,000–$8,000/month, and a $10M/year store can be closer to $15,000–$25,000/month.

Very high-volume merchants move off the flat rate entirely onto a variable, revenue-based platform fee — that’s where pricing becomes fully custom and quote-based. It’s generally only cost-effective once your store’s revenue and complexity are high enough that the extra features and savings on transaction fees offset that jump in cost.

Is It Worth Upgrading?

The short and honest answer to this question is: it depends on your current business situation. If you are already pushing the limits with your existing plan — too many visitors, multiple custom requirements, too much manual labor — Plus can actually save time and costs in the long term. If you are not there yet, it’s better to grow on top of it than to use it too soon.

In Short

Shopify Plus is the enterprise plan from Shopify, made for businesses requiring more power, greater customization, and better support than offered by regular plans. Being better for everyone doesn’t mean being better at all — it means being the right one only after a given scale size of your business. Usually, if you are scaling rapidly and feeling the limitations of the Shopify Standard plan, it’s time to consider the Shopify Plus plan.
